Oral History Interview, Richard Nicolas (2210)
Abstract
This interview with Richard Nicolas, a U.S. Navy veteran who served from 2008 to 2013, examines the contemporary experience of a Filipino national who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. The interview centers around Nicolas’ decision to enlist with the U.S. Navy, his life leading up to his service, the culture shocks he faced while serving, and the development of kinship bonds between Filipino servicemen as a consequence of mutual understanding and economic survival. The conclusion of the interview details Nicolas’ decision to step away from the U.S. Armed Forces in order to pursue his doctorate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and how his experiences in the Navy have influenced his academic career. This interview was conducted for inclusion in the Badger Veterans project and is housed in the Oral History Program at the UW-Madison Archives.
