Early long-range planning at UW-Stout was concerned with the development of the physical plant. It was not until 1962 that the administration began a concerted effort to make plans for the overall future development of the University. In October of that year, a committee was appointed to determine both the purpose and long-range goals of the University. In August of 1976, a new long-range planning process was introduced. This called for a periodic look at the context in which the University operates and in which it may expect to operate in the future by studying societal conditions and making assumptions about plausible future possibilities. For many years long range planning was under the direction of the Planning and Information Office. In 1989, long range planning fell under the auspices of the Strategic Planning Committee which reports to the Assistant Chancellor.
