Abstract:
Correspondence of the Reverend John N. Davidson, his parents, and his half-sister Orpha E. Leavitt with relatives, classmates, parishioners, and other associates. The early family letters touch on aspects of pioneer life in northern Illinois, southwestern Wisconsin, and northern Michigan. The collection also contains letters pertaining to an expedition to the California gold fields in 1850, the Civil War service of John Davidson's uncles, Orpha Leavitt's teaching at Downer College and elsewhere, Davidson's newspaper apprenticeship at Viroqua, Wisconsin; his college education, and his Wisconsin pastorates. Among the papers is correspondence pertaining to Davidson's history of early missionary activity published in 1895 under the title In Unnamed Wisconsin, the notes and records he collected later for a projected history of Congregational and other Protestant churches in Wisconsin, and papers of two organizations with which David was associated: the Prohibition State Central Committee for Wisconsin and the Fond du Lac Ministers Association.
