Abstract:
Records of the bureau's mental health program primarily consisting of information on training programs, conferences, and workshops held around the state in conjunction local school, city, district, and county health officers and university faculty. The files document the careers of Abraham B. Abramovitz and Eugenia Cameron, who headed the mental health preventive program (earlier known as the Division of Child Guidance and the Division of Mental Health), and they include detailed narrative reports prepared by consultants, correspondence, memoranda, writings, minutes, bibliographies, brochures, statistics, and information on films and other outreach programs. Some projects are documented by case studies of individuals. Many of the files concern the work of the child guidance clinics established in most Wisconsin counties. In addition to correspondence, these files variously include clinic minutes and annual reports. The records of the Dane County Child Guidance Center and the Washington-Ozaukee Child Guidance Center are particularly extensive. In addition to in-service projects for nurses, teachers, social workers, and other professionals who worked with children, the bureau also conducted classes for parents and lay leaders. Nurses in-service projects; a Reading Mother program in Waupaca; and school programs in Baraboo, Beloit, Eau Claire, La Crosse, Menasha, and Wausau are well documented in the records. Documented organizations with which the division worked include the State School Health Council and the Mental Health Advisory Committee. Six photographs document bureau exhibits and activities at the Washington-Ozaukee Child Guidance Center.
