Historically significant, precedent setting legal case files of permanent research value from the state Department of Justice (DOJ). These files are governed by section 165.25(7), Wisconsin Statutes. Significant cases include, but are not limited to, Indian treaty cases, environmental issues, civil rights cases, labor relations cases, misconduct by public officials, and defense of state programs that have constitutional dimension. Beginning in 1991, supervising attorneys and/or the Division of Legal Services administrator determines which cases are historically significant. These cases are periodically reviewed by a panel consisting of personnel from DOJ and the State Historical Society. Historically significant cases are to be retained separately from routine case files.
