Abstract:

Records of a project created in response to a federal judicial decree in Pitts v. Wisconsin Department of Revenue. The decree required the Department of Revenue to determine whether Wisconsin nonprofit organizations practiced race discrimination in their membership procedures. Organizations found guilty of discrimination had their tax-exempt status revoked. Records include correspondence; notes; constitutions, rules and bylaws of non-profit organizations; legal briefs; court decisions; exhibits; and hearing transcripts of revocation proceedings. Non-profit organizations include the Eagles Club, Elks Lodge, Knights of Pythias, Moose Lodge, Masons, and Odd Fellows.
