Abstract:
Photographs documenting natural resources, conservation, commercial industries, recreation, and public relations activities in Wisconsin under the direction of or of interest to the Wisconsin Conservation Department, 1930-1942. Additionally there are images of Native Americans, especially the Menominee. Natural resources documented include local and state parks, state forests, lakes and rivers, and scenery around the Wisconsin Dells. Conservation activities include forest, fish, animal, and game management. Commercial industries include fishing, logging, and shipping. Images of recreation activities include camping, boating, riding, swimming, shuffleboard, and tennis documenting tourism and the promotion of tourism in Wisconsin. The photographs are mounted on 5x8 index cards, which include descriptive information, location, date, name of photographer (if known), and original indexing terms and image management information used by the conservation department. Many of the images include people engaged in conservation activities or recreation but the bulk of the collection is landscapes and scenery without people. Among the well documented locales are Brunet Island State Park, Copper Falls State, Council Grounds State Forest, Devil’s Lake State Park, and Kettle Moraine State Forest. Governor Philip La Follette is included in many of the public relations photographs.
