Abstract:
Records documenting the role of the bureau as a source of technical assistance to persons and organizations working for equal opportunity. The Bureau of Community Services was created within the Equal Rights Division in 1972 during a reorganization of the Department of Industry, Labor, and Human Relations. The bureau separated the educational mission of the division from the investigative and enforcement functions. It was renamed the Program Services Bureau in 1973. The series contains general administrative files and subject files on services to African Americans, Native Americans, disabled people, the Spanish speaking, and youth. Also included are tape recordings of interviews and public hearings taken during the Bureau's 1973-1975 Native American Project. The NAP was a large-scale audit of the range of state services provided to Wisconsin's Native American populations, and was carried out through public hearing testimony by interviews conducted with Native Americans and other concerned individuals throughout the state.
