Abstract:
Records of an organization of black and white Mississippians dedicated to the creation of better race relations through education and the use of public relations. Numbering 400 members in 1965, the MCHR sought to expand the economic, cultural, and civic opportunities of all state citizens. The records mainly consist of Xeroxed copies of the correspondence of Kenneth L. Dean, Executive Director of MCHR in 1965. Also included is a constitution, an annual report from 1975-1976, copies of notes and newspaper clippings regarding the shooting of MCHR supporter Rev. Donald Thompson in 1965, reports, and printed reference material. The tape records a group discussion of March 5, 1966, held with black students attending integrated colleges throughout the South. Transcripts of this tape, and of a speech of Senator Charles H. Percy, are also in the collection.
