Abstract:
Papers of Philleo Nash, a prominent Wisconsin Democrat, primarily concerning the 1956 Presidential election campaign. Nash was a member of the Wisconsin delegation to the Democratic Convention in Chicago that year and was chair of the Wisconsin State Democratic Committee. Included is correspondence and itineraries; campaign literature and speeches by Averell Harriman, Estes Kefauver, and Adlai Stevenson; and scrapbooks of newspaper clippings and press releases. A few items concern his 1955 election as state chair and his election to the office of Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor in 1958. Also documented are Nash's education and his varied professional life including his career as an applied anthropologist, manager of the family cranberry business, university professor, civil rights activist, and public servant.
