Abstract:
Collection of papers and photographs, circa 1850-circa 1998, of Richard Vincent, a monument salesman for J.P. Vincent & Sons Monument Company in Galena, Illinois, whose territory covered northwest Illinois and southwest Wisconsin. Vincent's avocation was collecting historical information and photographs documenting the area, in particular lead mining and the communities in the lead-mining region, especially Galena, from the late 1800s to 1998 (bulk 1860-1940). For other communities, Vincent's research concentrates on local mining activities as well as the general history and tools of farming and railroads. The transparencies comprise the most important part of the collection and are accompanied by an index identifying each slide and, in the case of Galena, cross-referencing by subject.
