Abstract:
Graphic designs and business papers, mainly 1893-1940, of a prominent La Crosse, Wisconsin interior design firm that was established by Odin J. Oyen in 1888 and that continued operations through the 1930s under the management of Oyen's son Leighton. The firm was known across the Midwest for its work on theaters, courthouses, and other public buildings. After World War I the firm turned to local residential work. Designs and sketches, many unidentified, are the bulk of the collection. Included are presentation quality drawings, various types of preliminary sketches, and photographs for many Oyen projects. Business records include estimates, specifications, contracts, inventories, correspondence, and subject files that best represent the period 1894 to 1914. Financial records such as invoices, journals, ledgers, and payrolls are best for the 1920s. They provide an incomplete picture of company operations, although the records do contain information on Oyen's vendors and the tastes of his clientele. General records include catalogs received (including two from the Rookwood Pottery Architectural Department), clipped illustrations saved for reference, sample forms, scrapbooks, memoranda books, and other business records. In addition, the collection contains miscellaneous family papers and information on a 1979 exhibit about Oyen at UW-La Crosse curated by Joan M. Rausch and Leslie F. Crocker.
