The Cooperative Project was started in
April of 1937 under the auspices of the WPA Administration for the city of New York. It was
initiated by Valery John Tereshtenko, a former assistant professor of Cooperation at the
Institute of Agricultural Cooperation in Prague, Czechoslovakia. A Cooperative Bibliography
was produced under the authority of the Works Progress Administration of the U.S. Government
during the years 1937-1942, by some 90 professional workers, including 14 translators. It
consists of 24,000 items (information recorded on index cards): alphabetically by author,
within country, and cross-indexed by subject. Each item is also abstracted in files in the
first 40 boxes of the collection. English
Collection is predominantly in
English but includes records that are in Swedish, Finnish, Russian, German, Spanish, and
Italian.
