Abstract:
Collection consists of thirty-six photographs documenting the Latino civil rights movement in Milwaukee from the late 1960s through the 1970s. The photos document several aspects of El Movimiento ("The Movement" in English) including rallies, hearings, artworks, the Brown Berets, key individuals (including Cesar Chavez and Father Groppi), and public demonstrations in both Milwaukee and Madison. The photos were intended for use in the political community newspaper La Guardia, and were given to Juan Alvarez by Charlie Quesada (former editor of La Guardia) in the mid 1970s. Most of the photographs were taken by Chuck Miller. Collection also includes the October 1969, issue of La Guardia and three newspaper clippings from Soul City Times showing 1970 welfare demonstrations.
