FROM A CORRESPONDENCE FROM CLAIRE VAN VLIET: "Enclosed is Beauty in Use by Sandra McPherson; poems inspired by her collection of African-American quilts illustrated by Claire Van Vliet with pages of interlocking papers to form two-sided quilt squares. These papers have been in the collecting and making specifically for this project for the last five years. Some of the strongly coloured sheets were made here at the Janus Press as were the paste papers. The Japanese papers are mostly Chiyogami specially ordered by Nancy Jacobi at The Japanese Paper Place in Toronto, though several were found at Aiko in Chicago. The western handmade papers are from MacGregor-Vinzani, Magnolia, Richared Langdell, and Barcham Green with the thin black abaca concertina structure sheet from Twinrocker. The concertina is a new book structure and it is entirely non-adhesive....
P.S. There is a poly bag in the box of the bits cut off or out of the squares. They are too nice to throw away and finally too small to use, BUT you never know! So they have been sent to you to get them out of the way of temptation." Signed by Claire Van Vliet and dated 30 October 1997.
