The young Weimar Republic was besieged by revolution from both left and right.
The photograph on Card 174 shows a scene of Germany's leftist Spartacist Group rioting in Berlin in March 1919. The paramilitary nationalist troops approaching the barricades were actually less interested in saving the threatened republic than in preserving the means to create a revived military machine for the future.
