The Khmu'-Khuen village of Pang Kwen was one of the larger Khmu'-Khuen villages in the province of Houa Khong. It was more prosperous than many other Khmu' villages, as indicated by the large rice storage buildings that were usually full following the harvest. Here, children are standing to the side of a grassy area because they have just seen the USAID Bell Jet Ranger helicopter land, probably bringing school supplies. Behind the children are village houses up to the top of the hill, and to the left of the village path rice storage sheds. They were built away from the other dwellings in case of a fire in which the year's worth of rice could be destroyed.
