Front page of a special twenty-four page section of the August 15, 1946 Manitowoc Herald-Times, published just before Veterans’ Recognition Day that would be held on Saturday, August 17 at the Manitowoc County Fair. Under a large "Welcome Home" headline in script, the entire front page carries an illustration of uniformed soldiers marching in front of a stylized "honor roll" monument. On the inside pages are dozens of large sponsored ads paying tribute to the county’s World War II veterans, expressing appreciation for their service, welcoming them home, and celebrating victory and peace. There are also news articles about numerous aspects of Manitowoc County’s role in the war, including statistics on rationing, war bond sales, salvage drives, civil defense efforts, and local manufacturing. One article reports that 6,202 Manitowoc County men and women enlisted or were inducted through the two selective service boards in the county, not including those who served in the Coast Guard. Another article states that 179 had been killed or died in service, and one was still listed as missing.
