Occasion: / Visitors from the location have come to see the headman and to present him with a horse, a gift from one of their number (a man who works in Johannesburg, in the mines). The headman and his family welcome the visitors by providing a large pot of beer for them (with numerous billycans for the many guests) and slaughtering a goat / A number of speeches on both sides are given during the presentation and acceptance ceremony, including speeches by the king, Diliz' Intaba Mditshwa, who is also attending, and songs are sung / About 200 people are present / Songs are sung in Xhosa / Visitors, recipients of gifts, and all present are Mpondomise / Dancing, waving of sticks and staffs, and graceful movements accompany the singing, and many women dance along the outside of the group, embroidering the basic rhythms. / The gift-horse is always in the center of the group
Songs: Speeches of presentation and acceptance have been given, and more will follow. Now, those who are presenting the horse to the headman (they have been inside one of the houses until now) come out in a procession, singing songs which are considered their songs for the duration of this event. They will be answered later by songs sung by the members of the headman's group. / Second song / The king requests that a hymn be sung, following the formal presentation and acceptance speeches: "Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika." / Third song / The headman's group now responds to the songs of the gift-givers with their own songs. This takes place after the formal speeches are given. It is in the form of a procession around the clearing, with the gift-horse in the center. This is the time when the headman formally accepts the gift.
