A formal head shot of Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, 1856-1931, the first African American doctor in Janesville. Born in Pennsylvania, Williams began his career as a barber in Edgerton, became apprenticed to Dr. Henry Palmer in Janesville, and in 1883 completed his medical education in a Chicago medical college. He continued to practice medicine in Chicago. "Dr. Dan" is said to have been the first doctor to have successfully sewn up the heart of a Chicago man who had been stabbed in the heart.
