Temporary sawmill in Houei Kong Cluster in Attapu Province
Date
ca. 1965
Summary
A temporary sawmill was used initially to cut lumber from local trees for the construction of schools in the Houei Kong Cluster in Attapu Province. Because the road between Pakxong and Houei Kong (L-56, XB 6473) was usually insecure, lumber could not be transported into Houei Kong for construction of schools and clinics. It was also too expensive to fly in lumber, so this temporary sawmill was brought in to resolve the problem in 1965. Its operators had to be trained and were eventually all Nyaheun; however, the operators in this photograph were not Nyaheun.
