In 1968 IVS volunteer George Viles helped the local Nyaheun organize a cooperative sawmill in Attapu Province. The mill, with major inputs from the local owners and some assistance from USAID, was organized to fulfill a growing need for lumber in the Houei Kong Cluster, such as for the construction of new school classrooms. In this photograph sawing operations are underway. All the equipment was purchased by the 12 cooperative owners from Pakxe in 1968. The mill is located at the junction of the road to Nong Pranuan (XB 6463) and Lassasine (L-130, XB 7364). The site is known locally as "Thong Hurro", which is a Nhyaheun word for the medicinal plant (hurro) found in the immediate area of the sawmill.
