The files in this digital collection originate from the Midwest Deer and Wild Turkey Study Group (MDWTSG; 1975 – present) and the Great Lakes Deer Group (GLDG; 1944 – 1996). Most files are proceedings or notes from annual meetings of these groups.
The Midwest Deer and Wild Turkey Study Group (MDWTSG) is made up of agency deer and wild turkey wildlife biologists in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Ontario, South Dakota and Wisconsin. The MDWTSG is sanctioned by and affiliated with the Midwest Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies.
The MDWTSG was founded in 1975 by attendees of the Midwest Fish and Wildlife Conference and meets annually to exchange ideas and information relating to common problems and objectives of deer and wild turkey research and management in the Midwest. Each agency provides written updates on the habitat, populations, hunting, harvests, research and management programs of deer and wild turkeys. There are occasional other outputs of this group, like results on a survey of deer monitoring methods used in the Midwest and maps of deer density. Browse documents from the MDWTSG.
The GLDG was founded at the 1944 North American Wildlife Conference when deer managers met with Aldo Leopold and drafted a statement called "The Deer Problem – Nation Wide". This unification led to annual meetings and organized field trips to discuss, exchange, and understand the similarities and differences of deer research and management among different regions of the Great Lakes. The GLDG eventually merged with the MDWTSG in the 1990s bringing its long history of collaboration and cooperation into the larger group. Browse documents from the GLDG.
