Rice is typically milled by hand in Hmong villages. Here three Blue Hmong (Hmong Njua) women are working as a team to mill rice using a millstone. One woman pushes and pulls the lever that moves the stone, while another prepares to place the rice to be milled. The rice has been mixed with water (from the bucket behind the millstone) before it is placed in the center of the stone. A type of rice gruel will emerge underneath. The rice used in this case is probably inferior for consumption and is being used to make gruel to feed livestock or pigs. Several boys are watching.
