• On the second day of August 1934 President Hindenburg died. This postcard shows a black-banded photo-portrait of the old war hero on his deathbed. As Hindenburg passed into immortality, Hitler was freed from the last symbolic presence of restraint in government. Two weeks later he assumed the office of President and sole executive power in Germany.
