The German siege of Verdun, one of the bitterest and most infamous battlefields of World War I, is pictured on Cards 120 and 121. General Falkenhayn determined to make Verdun a "Blood Pump," and the apocalyptic image on the famous German medal by Walther Eberbach commemorates his success. Verdun remains today a symbol of French resistance and national defense; it remains also a symbol of the destructive force of war and the death of a generation in World War I.
