Since the time of this photo, the Lao government has replaced the term "Kha", used to designate peoples such as the Kammu (Khmu'), with "Lao Theung" (upland Lao) in order to avoid the pejorative associations of the former, which means slave or servant. However, "Lao Theung" is also misleading as people like the Kammu (Khmu') are not ethnic Lao.
