This is a procession before Luang Prabang's school for the New Year in which the royal elephants pay homage at each of three wats. Their guides are Kammu (Khmu)', who at the New Year the Lao acknowledge as their "older brothers", that is, as the original inhabitants of the area. This is despite their low status in the social hierarchy and the fact that even in the mid 1950s Kammu were sometimes corveed for road building in Luang Prabang.
