Professional papers of Fredrik Turville Thwaites, a prominent Wisconsin geologist. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence related to Thwaites’ research publications, correspondence related to major geological field trips, manuscripts of unpublished reports, and materials from several courses Thwaites taught in the geology department of the University of Wisconsin. One part of the collection relates to a long paper and accompanying maps that Thwaites and two colleagues prepared for the USGS but was rejected for publication, largely due to Thwaites’ conflicts with USGS geologist E. O. Ulrich. There is an album of photographs showing geology and landscapes in Wisconsin, and several manuscripts of an unpublished textbook Thwaites wrote on geomorphology.
