Oral History Interview, Judy Houck (1534)
Abstract
Judith Houck was born and raised in rural northern California. Houck was the youngest of four children with a father who was a zoology professor and a mother who stayed home. Houck attended a college-prep elementary school until first grade and then transferred into standard education until she graduated highs school and moved out of California. Houck attended St. Johns College in Santa Fe, New Mexico and graduating in 1985 with a B.A. in Liberal Arts. Houck then took a few years to work in a law firm in San Francisco and soon determined it wasn’t the job for her. In 1989 Houck attended graduate school at the University of Wisconsin- Madison earning a M.A. in History of Science and Medicine in 1994. She continued her education at UW-Madison receiving a Ph.D. in History of Science and Medicine in 1998. Houck became actively involved with the Gender and Women’s Studies program at UW-Madison during her graduate school years where she focused her studies on women’s health. Houck joined UW-Madison’s faculty in 2002 as an Assistant Professor active in Medical History and Bioethics, Women’s Studies, History of Science, and the Center for Women’s Health Research. In 2008 Houck became an Associate Professor and then soon after, in 2011, was named the Associate Chair of the Gender and Women’s Studies Department, which holds true today. Houck continues her work as an active publisher, researcher, and professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
