FISHERY ASSESSMENT FOR THE DOUGLAS COUNTY SUBMERGED LANDS BETWEEN ORBA AND WISCONSIN GRASSY POINT
Abstract
A fishery assessment was _conducted of the embayment between the present ORBA Coal Facility and Wisconsin Grassy Point in the St. Louis Bay. These are Douglas County submerged lands (platted government lots) which are being considered as a fill area for development of a new industrial site of about 300 acres, the fill area being approximately 200 acres. The fishery assessment was designed to define the importance of this area as a spawning, forage and nursery area for major harbor and Lake Superior fish stocks. Specifically, the study was intended to (1) assess the fishery value of those bays between the Arrowhead Bridge and Blatnik Bridge in relation to other regions of the Superior-Duluth Harbor area and (2) assess the relative importance of the study area compared to other inshore areas between the Arrowhead and Blatnik Bridges.
