Amiodarone Pharmacovigilance : An Assessment of Patient Population and Follow-up
Abstract
Amiodarone is a medication commonly used in cardiology practice due to its unique effectiveness for both ventricular and atrial arrhythmia management. It does however also have risks for serious toxicity, and in an effort to minimize the risks, routine monitoring is recommended including baseline pulmonary function tests, lab work screening liver and thyroid function every 6 months, as well as yearly chest x-rays. In this study, we aimed to create a registry of the outpatients actively treated with amiodarone at Mayo Clinic Health System Northwest Wisconsin and determine how frequently lapses occurred recommended monitoring. This registry is now the starting point for a formal amiodarone medication monitoring program.
