Mary Jo Rathke received her undergraduate degree from the College of Saint Teresa and her masters from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She first came to Stout as an instructor in 1959. For three of her years at Stout, Rathke was chair of the English Department, from the late 1960s-Spring 1971. While at Stout, she developed proposed programs in Industrial Communications, Technical Writing, and in the teaching of Communications Skills. She retired in 2000.
