The first mention of a speech-related course appeared in the 1904-1905 catalog listing a course for Kindergarten teachers in "Expression". Public Speaking first appeared as a course in 1915-1916. Originally part of the English Department, Speech was established as a separate department in 1949 taking along the theatre component from the English Department. In 1962-1964, an English and Speech minor first appeared in the catalog; followed, in 1964-1966, with a separate Speech Minor. The Forensics Program started in 1963-1964 and Foreign Languages were first offered at Stout in 1964 under the auspices of the Speech Department. WVSS, the university radio station, first broadcasted in 1969-1970.
