The Annals of Tourism Research was first published in 1973 under the leadership of Dr. Jafar Jafari as editor. The publication was intended as a social science journal focusing on the academic perspectives of tourism. International in scope, the Annals looks at tourism as both a discipline and a socio-economic subject in order to encourage the development and dissemination of tourism research and facilitate the application of data and theoretical frameworks to the academic and practical problems of tourism.
Originally it served as the official journal of the Society for the Advancement of Tourism Industry. In 1978, volume 5, the Annals became a quarterly publication. Previously it had been issued more frequently although the exact number of issues varied. From 1973-1981 the publication was issued through the Habitational Resources Department at Stout. In April 1982, with volume 9, Pergamon Press began publishing the Annals with Dr. Jafari, a faculty member at Stout, remaining as editor.
