Predicting VO2max and Ventilatory Threshold utilizing the Rockport Fitness Walking Test and terminal RPE
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the accuracy of estimating VO2max and Ventilatory Threshold from the RFWT time and RPE at the conclusion of the test. Subjects (N=125) were 18-67yrs of age and ranged from sedentary to very active with VO2max ranging 25.2-60.1ml/kg/min. Each subject performed an incremental maximal treadmill test using a modified Balke protocol. VO2max and VT were measured using open spirometry. After 24-48hrs rest, subjects performed the RFWT and gave terminal RPE using the Borg 6-20 scale. Measured vs. predicted VO2max presented fair to moderate correlations. Measured vs. predicted VO2 @ VT presented low correlations. Compared to the original RFWT (Kline et al. 1987), a modified prediction equation using Borg 6-20 terminal RPE in place of terminal HR performed better (R2 = 0.464). Simplified versions were found to improve in validity with more predictors.
