The Revised Catalogue of Vocal Solos and Duets in Biblical Order satisfies the
requirements of the culminating project for the Masters of Music Education degree from
the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point. The intent of this project beyond academic
exercise is to provide a useful tool for vocal soloists, church musicians, educators in the
field of Music Ministry, academic libraries, music publishers and vendors by producing a
current comprehensive "user friendly" worship planning resource and material list for
solo voice. Future goals include update of this edition and expansion into software
formats.
The concept of The Revised Catalogue developed out of a need to organize the
wealth of scriptural music available in such a way to make it readily accessible for
worship planning. Although several scriptural or lectionary-based planners have been
and are currently available for choral literature, it appears that James Laster's previous
project represented the only comprehensive listing of vocal solo or duet music in Biblical
order. Laster's work, having found its place in the music ministry, and in need of
substantial revision, provided the groundwork for this project. One benefit of such
organization is a considerable decrease in time required to search for titles based on
scripture. In and of itself, the existence of such a listing encourages and supports
thoughtful worship music planning in its identification of music written to specific
Biblical text. A further benefit of this organization is in the very compilation of the
wealth of scriptural music available for solo and duet voice.
Finally, The Revised Catalogue of Vocal Solos and Duets Arranged in Biblical
Order is intended to be a companion project to James Laster's Catalogue of Choral
Music Arranged in Biblical Order.
The revised edition includes: edited entries from the James Laster Catalogue, scriptural music not listed in the James Laster Catalogue, representation from an increased publisher base, page numbered indices, a bibliography of collections, and resource and lectionary listings pertinent to worship planning.
