Abstract:
Still images pertaining to the service John Mierow, an Augusta, Wisconsin resident who served with the military police in the 1993rd Airways and Air Communication Service Squadron during the Korean War. The collection include both black and white and color photographs, color slides, and color negatives taken by Mierow while he was stationed in South Korea showing airbases, aircraft, and destruction from the war. The airbases include K-13 at Suwon, K-14 at Kimpo, K-16 at Seoul, K-46 at Hoengseong/Wonju, and K-55 at Osan. The majority of images were taken while Mierow was stationed at K-46 Airbase. Included are images of the 1993rd AACS auxiliary site, tents used by Mierow and other servicemen while stationed at the base, various squadron headquarters, and Mierow posing at machine gun posts. Also included are images of F-51 Mustangs, both on the ground and in flight, from the 18th Fighter-Bomber Wing stationed at the base. Of particular interest are several images taken of South African F-51's also stationed at the base. Images taken at K-13 show the bombing range and include F4U Corsairs and an F-80 Shooting Star on bombing runs and a helicopter taking off to partake in an offshore rescue. Other documented aircraft include B-29 Superfortresses at Suwon, F-86 Sabres stationed at Kimpo, and C-46, C-118, C-119, and C-124 cargo planes stationed at Seoul. Images taken at Osan show the construction of K-55 and the location of the 1993rd AACS auxiliary site. Mierow also took images of the 1st Shoran Beacon Squadron stationed at Seoul, and recorded some of the destruction throughout the city. Also included in the collection is a scrapbook of scanned prints taken from photographs and slides in the collection that was apparently used in an exhibit for another museum. Three photographs in the collection show parts of this exhibit. Photocopies of the scrapbook pages are included in the collection for preservation purposes. The color negatives are of identified color photographs in the collection and are of F-51 Mustangs stationed at K-46.
