Abstract:
Artificial photograph collection of monuments erected to honor the service veterans throughout the state of Wisconsin to honor the service veterans from the Civil War, Spanish-American War, and World War I. The majority of photographs in the collection are of Civil War soldiers' monuments erected in various towns across Wisconsin. Included are images of soldiers' monuments in the towns of Brodhead, Cambridge, La Crosse, Lancaster, Mt. Horab, Racine, and Sheboygan. Other Civil War related images include a photograph of a monument in Bayfield Cemetery, the G.A.R. Monument in Ladysmith Park, the Lincoln Statue at Bascom Hill on the campus of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and a marker for the rendezvous location of the 1st Wisconsin Cavalry at Kensosha. Also included are images of the Bench Memorial and Memorial Arch at Camp Randall. Spanish-American War monuments include an image of veterans posing at the Hiker Monument in Oshkosh along with a veteran posing next to the Spanish War Veterans Monument in Waukesha. World War I monuments include photographs of the monument erected at King and an interesting Doughboy monument that was carved by a veteran of the war and erected in Viroqua. Two additional unidentified monuments are also included in the collection. One is of an obelisk displayed in the center of a small town. The other shows a Civil War soldier but does not include its location. The images of the Memorial Arch and the unidentified Civil War soldier monument are copies of original photographs.
