Abstract:
Papers of Charles E. Brown, a former curator of the Museum of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin and secretary of the Wisconsin Archaeological Society, consisting of correspondence; scientific and professional writings; information collected on Wisconsin Native Americans, lumbering, steam boating, local history, and folklore; extensive survey data, drawings, articles, notes, and clippings on Wisconsin archaeological sites (also on microfilm); World War I soldiers' letters; records of the Committee on State Archaeological Surveys of the National Research Council; material on professional and personal involvement with museums and museum associations, Friends of Our Native Landscape, the Lake Monona Wild Life Sanctuary, and other groups; sketches of implements and ornaments; an account book of pharmacist S. P. Kingsley of Adamsville, Michigan, 1845-1848; notes on Brown County by J. P. Schumacher; papers on the organization of the Nakoma Country Club; miscellaneous biographical material; and photographs, the bulk of which are from the reference files of the Wisconsin Archaeological Society, probably collected by Brown, as well as images of University of Wisconsin summer session students on field trips, 1913-1914, 1923, 1930, 1932-1933, and a celebration held for returning Chippewa [Ojibwe/Ojibwa] soldiers from service in World War I, June 19, 1919. Also included are photographs of indigenous Filipinos collected by Brown, likely while serving as curator of the United States Philippine Exposition at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904.
