Abstract:
Incoming correspondence about Wisconsin military units and soldiers, primarily addressed to the Adjutant General but also including letters to other governmental officials such as the Governor and Quartermaster General. Letters dating from the Civil War pertain to recruiting, desertion, the draft, commissions, casualty reports, complaints, and inquiries about individual soldiers chiefly from their dependents. Correspondence dating 1866-1882 often concerns pension documentation. After 1882, letters deal with National Guard unit supplies and equipment, commissions, recruits, and disciplinary matters. Files also include minutes from meetings of state military units, as well as one sample of original fabric offered by a New York manufacturer (Feb. 1, 1886). Records for June-September, 1874; 1876; 1877; January-May, 1890; and September, 1890-March, 1891, are missing.
