Abstract:
Correspondence of several Wisconsin governors with architects, prospective contractors, state officials, and others; bids; specifications; plans and diagrams; and reports and memoranda relating to the construction, maintenance, supply and improvement of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd State capitols. Included is material on the construction of fences and sidewalks in the Capitol Park, the collapse of the South Wing in 1883, the Capital Improvement Commission formed in 1903, and the reformed Capitol Commission which built the present Capitol after the 1904 fire. About this commission there are monthly reports, 1908-1910, of Lewis Porter, secretary of the commission; information on the selection of the architect; and some miscellaneous correspondence with George B. Post, the architect who was selected. Earlier architects who are represented include August Kutzbach, Stephen V. Shipman, and W.W. Boyington. Also included are contracts for maintenance and remodeling of the State School for Girls in 1904.
