Abstract:
Records collected in the Governor's office relative to the bankruptcy of the Chicago, Portage, & Superior Railroad, the state's involvement in the payment of the claims of the railroad's creditors and workers, and the transfer of its state timber lands to the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railroad. Included are records regarding the payment of individual claims; documents on the land transfer; extensive correspondence of Governor Jeremiah Rusk and claims agent Cyrus M. Butt with workers and contractors of the Chicago, Portage, & Superior Railroad and others; account ledgers; and payrolls and other background documents used to substantiate claims.
