Abstract:
Incoming and outgoing gubernatorial correspondence grouped by topic. The majority of the files span several administrations. Some of the documented topics consist of incoming correspondence matched with special letterbooks of outgoing letters, but the majority of the governor's outgoing letters may be found in the general letterbooks (Series 33). In general, this series consists of small quantities of correspondence about topics such as canals, railroads, lighthouses, and other internal improvements; relations with the federal government; the University of Wisconsin; Indians; immigration and land development; taxation and use of timber resources; the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey; fairs and expositions; and commemoration of Wisconsin's participation in the Civil War. Topics documented by larger quantities of correspondence such as legislation, military affairs, and wartime relief are catalogued as separate series.
