Abstract:
Papers of William Albert Steiger of Oshkosh, a congressional representative from Wisconsin's Sixth Congressional District (1967-1978), who gained national attention for his work on capital gains and safety in the workplace. Files contain correspondence, correspondent indexes, legislation working files, grants and projects, case files, press material and publicity including audio recordings of radio messages, reference materials, as well as a small amount of personal papers. Subjects covered in the collection include files on the Williams-Steiger Bill establishing OSHA; the Steiger Amendment reducing the capital gains tax; the Manpower Act; legal services for the poor; services to the elderly; voluntary military service; clear lakes bill establishing protection of the Great Lakes; abortion; Watergate; Vietnam and Vietnamese immigration and orphans; and secondary education. The collection contains a small amount of campaign material. Also includes films from the 1960 Rose Bowl and Parade between the University of Washington and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
