Abstract:
Records, mainly 1844-1857, of the Fourierite community established at Ceresco (Ripon) in 1844 and disbanded by vote of its members in 1849. The collection includes articles of incorporation, a constitution, and by-laws, 1845; minutes of meetings of the association and of its council, 1844-1857; lists of stockholders and stock transfers; copies of deeds, land transfers, and mortgages; and miscellaneous financial records kept by the association's treasurer, general agent, blacksmith, and nurseryman. In 1906 recollections of several surviving members of the Phalanx were collected and they are included. During the 1960s the collection was intensively studied by a history class at the University of Wisconsin. As a result, the collection also includes bibliographies and instructional materials, biographical data and analyses about individual members of the community, student papers, scattered transcripts from this collection and from the collection of S.M. Pedrick at the Ripon College Library, writings of Warren Chase, and photocopies of original documents in the possession of G.W. Lambert. At the same time most of the collection was microfilmed for student convenience along with a diary from the Michael Frank Papers (Wis Mss DM), the letters of William Stillwell (Oshkosh SC 96), and extracts from the A.J. MacDonald Collection of Utopian materials at Yale University.
