Abstract:

Records documenting several Milwaukee electric railway companies including the following: The Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Company; Milwaukee, Light, Heat and Traction Company; The Milwaukee Electric Railway and Transport Company; Wisconsin Electric Power Company; Milwaukee Northern Company; and Wisconsin General Railway Company. Most of the material deals with the technological evolution of the traction industry in the city of Milwaukee as well as the legal and financial development of the railway companies. The collection includes corporate histories that trace the companies through organization, expansion, and consolidation; reports, correspondence, minutes, and financial data that document rolling stock department concerns with railway equipment, accidents, labor, and construction programs; and numerous blueprints that detail construction specifications of Milwaukee city street lines and interurban routes as well as of new equipment for installation in trolley cars and buses. Also included are albums, ante 1924-1942, containing portrait photographs and biographical information on members of the Veterans' Association of the companies; and cartographic records, circa 1898-1963, consisting of maps, plans, and charts pertinent to the company's operations, construction projects, equipment and buildings.
