A small group of military and family correspondence and military reports and orders of General Samuel Sturgis, Civil War commander and Indian fighter, including letters from General George A. Custer, John Hay, and William H. Seward. One letter by Sturgis, June 12, 1870, recalls a conversation with Abraham Lincoln. Also contains biographical sketches of General Sturgis written by his wife, Jerusha Wilcox Sturgis, and of his daughter and his son-in-law, Ella Maria Sturgis and John Dinan Lawler, written by their daughter, Eleanor (Juty) Lawler Pillsbury. References are also made to John and Mary Sturgis, prominent Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, residents.
