Records of the Women's Jail Project (WJP), a community volunteer project founded in 1986 to offer support to women inmates in ways such as providing volunteer advocates; assertiveness and self-esteem training; facilitation of communication between inmates and their families, jail administration, the legal system, and social service agencies; and challenges of criminal justice policies and practices that discriminate against poor women and women of color. Includes correspondence from prisoners, staff, and volunteers; articles and clippings on the Project and Dane County jail; newsletters and brochures; volunteer training material; memoranda; handouts given to inmates at Taycheedah Correctional Institution; research reports; drafts of publications; bibliographies of resources on women prisoners; and tape recordings of a radio program about the Project broadcast on Madison station WTSO.
