Abstract:
Records of The Walrus Club, a women's "dining" club, founded in 1911 and taking its name from the Walrus in Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass, whose initial membership included such prominent women as Alice R. Van Hise, Althea H. Bardeen, Gertrude E. L. Slaughter, Ana M. Ely, Dorothy R. Mendenhall, and Louis Kimball Matthews. The club met monthly during the academic year at a member's home during which a talk or paper would be presented by a member on a subject of personal interest or expertise followed by general discussion. The records consist of biographies, mailing lists, presentation papers, and notes and minutes of the meetings. The Walrus Club disbanded in 2012.
